Portrait of Jaco... the Early Years Guestbook
I began listening to Jaco through Weather Report. As a musician, I loved the avante garde style of the band but that four string was off the wall. I went to see Weather Report at Ovens Auditorium in Charlotte. I left the show knowing I had seen the best bass player that ever will live. Not only did I see a level of virtuosity unreachable by mortals, this man was as into his sound as his audience. I especially enjoyed his solo which featured sampling and Jaco playing over Jaco playing over Jaco playing over Jaco. He set up the chorus by quadruplicating a riff, slapped the body of his Fender for a snare like sound, then took off with some amazing lead to round out the run. Here I am almost 30 years later and the only way I hear anything close is to listen to Weather Report live and play the same thing over again. Mary, your father was a genius and a visionary. I never met him but I love him. His pure feel for his music is what set him apart. He obviously loved his talent and thank God he shared it with the world. He died, I cried; he played, I cried. Only the brightest stars burn out the fastest. Your father was THE brightest.

Jaco and I played together for the first time with BS&T along with Larry Willis, Don Alias, Mike Stern and other rather excellent musicians, but Jaco took each of us up to another musical level. We hung together 24/7 throughout the world off and on for 15 years and I thought I knew Jaco. But this magnum opus by Mr. Bobbing gave me new perspective of the magnificence of Jaco's spirit which can only be communicated through listening to Jaco play. Thank you, Bob and God bless Jaco wherever you are.

PORTRAIT OF JACO is an emotional & compulsive collaboration of Jacos early years that has been worth the wait. Conratulations & thanks to Bob Bobbing for his commitment. It'll make you smile, laugh outloud & cry. A must have to any musician, who thought they knew JACO.

Bob Bobbing brought Portrait of Jaco to my office and gave me a preview of this remarkable documentary/CD. Although it had been many years since Bob first took me to see Jaco in Fort Lauderdale, he was still as passionate and excited as he always was about Jaco's amazing talent. We all remained good friends until the end.

Even though I was a bass player myself, I had the honor to have Jaco sit in with me and my various bands on keys, drums and sax. It was obvious he could have mastered any instrument of choice. I saw him just 2 days before he died and while we were talking he recited my previous phone number and address from 16 years earlier and he had only called my house maybe 4 or 5 times back then. Once when I went to his house to borrow a bass, (mine was being repaired) his little girl was sitting on the piano randomly pounding the keys and I asked "can she play any real tunes" and he responded, "that IS a real tune, man!" I mention these stories because he constantly amazed me with his perceptions, analysis and an amazing ability to think outside the box.

Much gratitude to Bob and his accomplishments with POJ.

This booklet and CD set are such a treasure. The hours, blood and sweat that went in to produce such a unique product comes through with a subtle amazement, like sitting in a long movie and never noticing the time going by. It is totally captivating and made with the fan and musician in mind. Great job on the location interviews, finding the priceless audio snippets and having the foresight to keep this stuff around so now we all can enjoy the process of this legendary musician's growth. Those times are always the most critical in development for any musician and this product makes me feel I never missed an important step in the making of "Jaco." I've bought copies for friends who are not rabid fans, but love a good story.

I hope this gets produced as a movie, but it still won't be as good as my imagination as I heard the actual voices and songs of a time gone by. Thank you for dedicating your time to this worthwhile project. Future players will benefit.

The storytelling of P.O.J. is seamless. As much as you think you may know about Jaco... P.O.J. enlightens, entertains, and inspires. To be able to hear both Jaco's musical and self growth throughout the compilation is magical beyond reproach. Well done, Mr. Bobbings. Anxious for the next in the series...
