Portrait of Jaco... the Early Years Guestbook
Still listening to "Portrait of Jaco".
"Rice Pudding" shows Jaco at an early age just nailing it! Jaco's ability to play so well at such an early age shows that he was an incredible talent, just beginning to bust onto the scene. I really wish that I could have been around to see Jaco developing on the bass. To this day, and forever into the future, Jaco will be the bassist to wich all others will only follow in his wake. His incredible talent is one that only a few people on this planet can have. I am just glad to be able to enjoy it in my lifetime. This CD set captures the growth of an awesome person with a musical talent that is comparable to the greatest musicians to ever walk the planet. Jaco will be forever missed, and forever remembered.

I finally got POJ! Dang if the post mark on the package wasn't DEC 1st!

I have wanted this one since before its release and it didn't disappoint.
Bob Bobbing has given us a sterling production with beautiful packaging and format, and not only a celebration of Jaco, but a tribute to all of the Cats back-in-the-day!
Everything Mary Pastorius said;

I would also like to see a release of just music without spoken words and maybe a seperate disc with just spoken words and interviews would be cool too.

Thanks, Mr Bobbing.
Incredible Stuff!

What a Great Job:
I just spent two hours reading the articles and stories. I applaud you all.
I met Jaco at the Blue Note in NYC one winter night while I was performing there with Mongo Santamaria. Jaco was sitting against the wall, next to me. I did'nt notice him, but he was there for two nights already. Jaco was a huge latin music fan and followed Latin music in NYC a lot at that time (1984). Well, to make a long story longer, I was in the bathroom after my set and Jaco was right next to me. Jaco looks over at me and asks me "Do you want to know why I play the bass better than you?" I was startled and thinking this stranger was maybe joking, I asked him "Yes, I'd like to know why you play bass better than I". So, Jaco asked me, "Do you have kids"? I then replied, "No, I don't sir". Jaco then said, "I do, thats why I play bass better than you!.
I had to think that one over, for I did'nt recognize who he was, though I listening to him a lot and was doing all of his licks on my bass that evening, ha ha ha....
I thought Jaco's response over quickly and realized that it made a lot of sense and it was a very wise thing to say. So I looked at Jaco again, and realized that it was Jaco Pastorius peeing in the stall next to me. I jumped in the air and tried to hug him and shake his hands, and we both started to laugh because you just don't do that in a mens bathroom in NYC.
That night he invited me to accompany him to a bar called "The Possible 20", a popular hangout for the best musicians in NYC at the time. I had little cash on me and was kind of shy to tell him. Jaco realized this and handed me a fifty dollar bill and told me to get him a cold one if I saw him without one. He then proceeded to introduce me to everyone there. I was talking with musical giants like Rasheed Ali, Hirum Bullock and many others. I remember when he first walked into that over crowded bar with me next to him. Everyone jumped, stopped what they were doing and greeted him, literally lining up to hug him and then look at me, and hug me too. This was the greatest night in my life as a bassist. His generosity and warmth as a human being was amazing. He had no ego trip and treated me like a little brother. After this, every time I saw him in concerts or in Latin music shows, he would see me and say, "Hey, Its you, Mongo's bassist".
I celebrate his birthday, as I celebrate Jimi Hendrix's birthday by playing their music all day long. Both of them are amazing inspirations to me and my bass playing and are sagittarians like me.
(I just clebrated my Birthday November 30th).
I have an autogragph that Jaco gave me after coming back to the Bluenote for the rest of our engagement there, and it says, very simply...Felicidades, Jaco.
I am blessed to have met him and it's a blessing to share this story with you all.
He was and is a true giant among musicians, and a great human being.
Felicidades, Eddie Resto

Bob
Congratulations on the OUTSTANDING job you did on the Jaco box set! It took me on a vivid journey back through the early years of the Jaco we knew.

It's been over 30 years since you introduced me to Jaco and I can still remember a few of the times I was with you at some of the clubs recording Jaco. Amazingly, your intuition to tape him back in the day brought us this precious gift. I tip my hat to you.

Keep up the good work Bob. YOU NAILED IT!

I witnessed the genius of Jaco back in late 1970's seeing Weather Report in Buffalo, NY. I had been playing bass for years but seeing him playing that night changed everything...EVERYTHING!. His pure abandonment to the sound was inspiring, his concentration and the joy in which he played left a mark to this day. I will never play as great as he did but I always use that experience of that night and the recordings I still listen to as the benchmark of greatness!

My name is Shane Clack and I've been playing the bass for 6 years...about a year ago, I heard Jaco for the first time and my jaw hit the floor. I will never be the same since that fateful day. Over the past year, I have progressed in my bass playing more than in the past 5 years compiled. I would trade anything to have been able to just shake one of those hands that was responsible for breaking unseen bounderies and for making the bass into what it is today.
Jaco, I thank you from the bottom of my heart and I will continue to carry on your legacy and I will teach your gospel to the masses. I look foward to meeting you in the future. Until then, rest in peace my friend

I was a friend to Jaco & Ingrid & Paul Hornmuller. I lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in 1973/74. My rememberance of Jaco is totally Awesome! I use to watch him and his father play , at, the yacht club outside, in Fort Lauderdale . Wow! What great talent! I have a picture of Joco's "Twin boys outside their backyard in Florida. They are 2 or 3 years old in the picture. Oni and Joe Hornmuller gave me the picture of the boys. I also , have a backstage pass from the "Playboy Jazz Festival" at the Hollywood Bowl, when Jaco , was playing with "Weather Report" Maybe, you would like to have them for Jaco's web site??? Jaco, will always be in our thoughts and hearts, the best "Bassist-Extrodinare" Ever! Thanks for the Musical Food!!! Helynn Miller & Oracle Derricotte

I Had the chance to play with the master in a smoke filled room at the University of Miami in 1973 .. or '74 I was a student of the music and a bass player - at the time. He was "the ****" everybody wanted to play and sound like him! We all filed off the frets on our Fenders thinking we could get that sound... What fools we were... It was amazing! I played the bass part on a Moog while he soloed... FAT Stuff! It was before he "Made It" and I'll never forget how free and relaxed he was when he was playing! I learned something in that room... all I have to do now is apply it!

I have just finished listening to "Portrait of Jaco" for the second time. (I just got it three days ago) When I get a new disc, I can tell if it will be something that I will listen to for a long time, right away. Well, this is one of those discs.

I heard Jaco for the first time around 1983. I had been playing bass for two years. Upon hearing "Heavy Weather" for the first time, I was in shock! By the time you finish listening to "Portrait of Jaco" you will be in shock.

This is without a doubt the best collection of Jaco history ever captured in a single package. It plays like a documentary movie. I read all of the booklet as I listened to it the first time through, and I learned quite a few things. On the second playing, I just listened. It is a wonderful collection of music that will inspire any musician, or anybody interested in the creation of a genius. To hear Jaco playing at the age of 19, you can hear his style already coming through. His sound was already there, and he was so far ahead of his time. MAN, I wish I was around Florida at the time he was beginning his assault on the musical world. This collection is what Jaco fans have been waiting for, and now have been rewarded with. I think Jaco would be very happy with this. I know I am, and I have been a fan for 20 years.

Thank you Bob, for this great collection, and for keeping Jaco's life and memories alive for years to come. No fan of Jaco's should be without this.
