Portrait of Jaco... the Early Years Guestbook
I remember the first time I heard Jaco a friend if mine played "Continium" for me to check out. I was in awe because of what I had just heard. I kept my friends CD and instantly became a Jaco fan trying to get my hands on anything he played on. He had a sound and feel like no else during his time. You could always tell one of Jaco's bass lines. He had "SOUL" and was "FUNKY". He's the reason why I play bass today. JACO WAS THE GREATEST!!!!!!!!!!

It was during the summer of '87 I remember playing paddleball with friends when this guy came up to us asking for change. I looked really hard and my heart dropped. It was Jaco. I had seen him there, at Holiday Park, in 1980 and all was fine...he had drastically changed, I gave him all I had and asked those with me if they had anything...they didn't know, then, who it was...a couple of months later, we heard of the trouble at Sunrise Musical Theater (I recall it was John Mc Laughlin) and the ensuing beating at the Midnight Bottle Club.
I'm glad you are sharing these recordings with the world to show the genius behind the enigma.

Saw Jaco once with WR, twice with WOM.
The cat always had me on the edge of my seat when it was solo time..............
In Royal Oak MI he did an encore with the theater oragan comming up from the orch pit floor. A lost era, and an even greater loss to music. We love ya baby!

Weather Report was a university that took that skinny dude and provided him with a fo' real MASTERS. I only saw him live once at Constitution Hall in DC. I was deaf for a week but that's where I heard THAT bass solo! I miss that cat.

Just got Portrait on Monday and have been listening constantly. WOW!!! You have really nailed the essence of the formative years in Jacos life. The Rider cuts are really great, as is the entire set. Those powerhouse arrangements have reawakened a lot of great memories from that one night in Nebraska when I first heard them perform with Jaco on bass. I am eagerly awaiting the release of your Rider double c.d. set, and the rest of your Jaco releases with his various groups. Bob, thank you many times over for taking the time to release this treasure trove of Jaco music. Thanks for caring about quality. When Jimi died there was an onslaught of bad releases, you took the time to do it right. Your love and respect for Jaco is very obvious throughout your production. Please keep those great releases coming. Every time I listen I learn something new about my favorite instrument. All the best for your future productions. You have brought integrity back into the music industry. It is so refreshing to hear an artist grow and expand their gift during their peak years.
