Portrait of Jaco... the Early Years Guestbook
History alone makes justice, the great work of great men unfolds by its own powers. Even mountains get moved. And it certifies that most of us, the Jaco admirers, were right: while one of POJ's purposes may be to dismistify superhuman Jaco by bringing us closer to the man himself during his early and very human evolution, in another way this superb documentary revindicates the righteousness of such a well deserved myth, for it shows openly -once and for all- what an unquestionable real genius he was. Jaco not only was incredibly gifted, that is, offered with talents and conditions by Nature, but he had will, vision and conscience of the times. These are elements that when found in one person only can produce serious effects in history. Jaco is an example of how urgent mankind definitions are to be revisited and how deep into this world is to be found superhumanity. Therefore we can figure the pricelessness of this wonderful event called Portrait of Jaco. Bob Bobbing achieved his Must Do beautifully, and we only can say bravo, and bravo again.

PORTRAIT OF JACO is, without question, an exhilarating triumph. The "audio documentary" approach is ingenious, riveting and thoroughly entertaining. The loving care, meticulous research, and unflagging commitment that Bob Bobbing brings to PORTRAIT has resulted in this proud celebration of Jaco's life, spirit and legacy.

What a rare treat to witness the evolution of a genius unfold before your ears. Imagine someone following Charlie Parker around with a tape recorder during his formative years, or chasing Django Reinhardt down and recording his development into one of the all-time greats. Now turn to the story of Jaco, and celebrate his remarkable and joyous musical journey. And don't forget to dance!

Thank you, Bob.

Thank you for acquainting me with a man I share a name with but never had the chance to know. Thank you for having the foresight to record Jaco back when he was younger than me even, and for preserving what you taped. Thank you for delving into this project and for getting it out there for basically anyone to hear. Thank you for vindicating and even painting a picture of all the enjoyable stories that my dad, my uncle Greg, Grandma Stephanie, Grandpa Jack, and Mary and John told me since I was a little girl with a sponge for a brain.

I am absolutely fascinated when I listen to Portrait. All I can think of when I'm done listening is Oliver Twist:

"Please sir, may I have some more?"

Bob,

Metaphoric Superman: To say that you have captured the essence of Jaco Pastorius understates the point. POJ is every bit as much of an emotional sojourn, as it is a musical one. Jaco played music as if it were a religion, and POJ isn't about mourning the dead; it is about celebrating resurrection. Beyond Jaco's immortal iconicity, you underlie the human being behind the genius: father, brother, lover, friend, and musician. You let the facts dispel myth, and prove that truth is far more powerful than fiction.

Genius isn't about chops, or even virtuosity, but simply the perpetuation of that rare individual who 'deliberately' breaks the mold and creates his own template. Jaco didn't just play the bass; he redefined it. His reinvention was rooted in the deepest of all passions. That remains his real legacy. Your honest portrait of the 'man' pays equal homage to the world in which Jaco lived, as well as offering deserved tribute to those who truly loved him. Anyone who listens to POJ and doesn't shed a single tear just doesn't get it. I do, and I thank you!

Was Jaco Pastorius the greatest bass player in the world? POJ answers that quintessential question once and for all.

I just received my long-waited POJ today, and I just can tell you that if the world knew of Jaco, this will be a completely different world. He has been an inspiration and example since I heard him at age 18, and I´m trying to pass this to my own children and to all the people I know. Thank you so much for this gift of life.

Way back in the 70's, I went to see Weather Report, and discovered Joco. He was mesmerizing. I couldn't take my eyes and ears off of him. I thought about his performance for days. Joco made me fall in love with the Bass that night. I will never forget him.

Bob,
I would like to thank you for creating this long overdue account of Jaco. The last time I saw him play was in Miami at a Weather Report concert. I remember playing gigs in Miami and seeing Jaco with Wayne's CC Riders. To see him with Weather Report was stunning. I realized he had truly become the worlds greatest and most dynamic bass player in one of the greatest modern jazz groups to grace the stage. He always remembered everyone's name and I will never forget seeing him after that Miami concert. I was so inspired by that concert and all the individual solos that everyone played, I don't think my feet hit the ground for at least three days!

Bert Angonis played the album for me and I was amazed at the tremendous effort you spent to bring this to life. Jaco deserves this tribute and you deserve heartfelt applause from all those who knew him!

Thank You,
Joe Mayer
