Portrait of Jaco... the Early Years Guestbook
Bob,

I am definitely awestruck by Portrait of Jaco. Congratulations on a masterful production. Jaco would be proud. On second thought knowing Jaco, he would probably say it's really a bunch of crap because he was just a cheap imitation of Jerry Jermont! Ha! That's what I loved about him, his outspoken and in your face attitude! He had that competitive spirit and it would come out in full force when we played raquetball. Yes, he beat me a lot more than I beat him, he was great at it.

Hearing Woodchuck with Bob and Billy sure brought back some precious memories.
The whole thing is awesome! The picture booklet is worth the price alone!

I have to tell you though, the track that grabs me the most is the train introduction and hearing his voice. I also grew up in Ft Lauderdale, and near the same tracks, except at the south end of town. You've managed to capture a bit of my life too and give the world a truthful honest look at a beautiful creative being that will be an inspiration to me forever!

Thank you.

Bob,

I am still absolutely awestruck over this amazing work you have created - "Portrait of Jaco - The Early Years." And especially so, since I am only too aware of the seemingly endless hurdles you have endured in order to bring this masterpiece to fruition. By holding steadfastly to your vision - despite all obstacles, neigh-sayers, and disbelievers - you have given not just my family, but the entire world a gift that will be treasured for generations. In one fell swoop - like a beacon in the night - POJ manages to cut through the darkness that engulfed my father's later years and shine a clear and brilliant light on the promise of those early years which shone as brightly as my Dad's beaming smile, and the South Florida sun.

Obviously, my Dad was blessed with extra-ordinary talents, but what POJ proves definitively for once and for all, is that the phenomenon we know as Jaco Pastorius was no freak accident. This is not a tale of luck nor chance. This is a story of an all-American boy who grew up like millions of other boys in 1950's USA, whose lives revolved around playing sports, going to school, delivering newspapers, church on Sunday, pulling pranks, and dreaming big dreams. But ultimately, he didn't just have a dream... he had a plan - and at 19 years old! As Ira Sullivan quotes my Dad as saying, "I am out to make this non-instrument an instrument." Through determination, belief in himself, and good old fashioned WORKING HIS ASS OFF, he then proceeded to accomplish - and surpass - everything he set out to do. This isn't tragedy, this is the American dream! And Bob, this is the "Jaco" you have given back to us through POJ. You have us all standing in our seats, cheering on and routing for this anti-hero, this underdog. You have put everything into it's proper perspective so beautifully - so artistically - and in doing so have brought back the incredible joy of it all. I think writer Peter Weiss sums it up perfectly in the opening text of the POJ booklet when he says... "Before there was the legend, there was Jocko. This is a Jaco to love."

Bob, I know you'd rather me not "make this about Bob", but I have to say what's in my heart so bear with me. In all honesty, I don't know where my Dad's legacy would be without you. Through your ceaseless efforts for over 10 years, you have managed to raise it - practically single-handedly - from the ashes and restore it to it's rightful place in music history (we're almost there!). In addition, you are UNQUESTIONABLY the force that has put this entire "Jaco Renaissance" into motion and I just want you to know that I do recognize and APPRECIATE all of this. And on a personal note, I have to tell you that you have been nothing short of a mentor to me. You have given (and continue to give) me an unbelievable education in this business we call music, and I feel I have learned more invaluable lessons from being "in the trenches" with you these past years than I could have ever learned in a college classroom. There's so much more I could say, but I'll wrap up with this..."Portrait of Jaco" IS the world's greatest anthology and quite possibly the most important work that will ever be done on my father. And Bob, nobody - not a major label - NOBODY on earth could have pulled this off but you. THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!

Your friend always,
Mary Pastorius (United States)

Thank you Bob Bobbing for making this Cd possible! especially the CC Riders tracks are amazing! Jaco's bassplaying is awesome on those tracks. You really hear the gig experience there from playing CC gigs everynight. He is in top shape on those tracks, unlike some other postumious releases. This truly is the real deal.

As a young bassist in the eighties, I was exposed to Jaco and his work during what were to be his twilight years. Living in close proximity to New York City during that time of my life, the "Jaco Stories" were rampant. Hearsay and conjecture were the order of the day regarding all that surrounded Jaco. The times in his life where he was healthy, happy, and creating beautiful music in South Florida were never spoken of.

After many years of media focus on the dark aspect of Jaco's history, "Portrait of Jaco" finally puts the spotlight on the development of one of the most important musical figures to emerge in the 20th century. In terms of presentation and content, it's a fitting work that fills a void that once existed regarding the personal history of Jaco Pastorius.

One cannot ask for a more appropriate figure than Bob Bobbing to lovingly assemble the collective of commentary, memories, photographs, and music that "Portrait of Jaco" is crafted from. His skills as an author, historian, and producer are top-notch, but what separates him from being simply those things mentioned is that he was there with Jaco as it all happened.

Bob,

I just purchased the "Jaco: The early years." Congratulations on a wonderful achievement. Your CD/book is already a treasure to me as I'm sure it will be for any of us who knew Jaco. I think it will be an invaluable resource for musicians, and music historians and listeners far into the future. You were faithful to the truth and times that we lived. You captured something of Jaco's unique genius. For me you also brought back wonderful memories of special people and a special time of my life. I know I will be listening to and reading this work over and over.

I can't thank you enough.

I saw Jaco with Weather Report in 1975 at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis, MN. I can never go near that theater without thinking of that night, and Jaco. His impression on me as a musician and bass player remains to this day unmatched.
