Portrait of Jaco... the Early Years Guestbook
Jaco was, is an inspiration to me as a bass player and recently a singer songwriter. Not only his musicianship was amazing but just the persona that he exuded. Luckily there are enough people around to keep his memory alive to inspire the future artistic freedoms.

Bob, I haven't even bought or heard POJ yet (it is next on my list of "must-have"s), but I want to take this opportunity to thank you for inviting me to your place and sharing some incredible stories as well as a 'sneak preview' last year. Though I came in contact several times with Jaco, I wasn't as close to him as my brother and many others who worked and played with him here in South Florida. And I wasn't nearly the caliber of musician I wished I had been in order to recognize his true talent even back then. I guess 'the saxophone story' is the best I can offer; the night Jaco showed up at GAME's Oakland Park warehouse with a sax he'd picked up at a pawn shop and had owned less than a week. And he played it like he'd had it for ten years. Later that same evening, he blew me away again when he picked up my guitar and began playing some funky rhythm. And I thought he was just a bass player....I hope he has forgiven me for what I said to him on a session at Criteria a few years later, something I'm too embarrassed to relate here. The impression Jaco left on me the most was his passion and enthusiasm for the music, the same of which that has obviously driven you to complete and present to the world such an unbelievable body of work. We thank you, Bob.

I began to love the bass when I started to listen to Jaco. every time I hear Jaco I have a rainbow of emotions. I am sad that I cannot Shake jaco's hand and tell him that he is the greatest. But he allready knows this!!!

Bobby,

What you've accomplished here is absolutely staggering, in terms of true historical impact. I feel so very fortunate having you and Jaco as friends. In my mind if the word, "Friend," were to be looked up in the Dictionary...there should just be a picture of your smiling face there with no text. If the public had any idea at the depth of your sacrifice to give our boy what he so richly deserves, not to mention setting the record straight; it would blow their minds. This I know. It still blows my mind, and I see it every day. Thank you for all the things that Pat mentioned, and thank you even more for being a perfect example to others of what a true friend really is. "POJ," is your Masterpice.

Bob:
What a superb, no..spectacular production, devoted to a truly legendary artist of OUR time. The future will, however, prove Jaco's art, artistry to be truly TIMELESS!!

This is more than a mere collection or anthology of his music: it is a DOCUMENT and as such belongs on the shelf of each and every person with even the slightest interest in rock and jazz. And, should they not have any interest in either, once they have this production in hand, they will quickly become converts.

I anxiously await your next release.

This is really stellar work here. At last an endeavor that is commensurate to Jaco's vision and beauty! In my heart, I know Jaco is smiling!!

Bob, I had a great time talking about the old days in Ft Lauderdale with you. (at modern music) As I said the other day, I'm almost ashamed to say I damn near forgot just how good Jaco was until I got a copy of Portrait Of Jaco. It has been in my cd player for a month, and once again all other bass players are falling flat in the wake of Jaco. As silly as it sounds I'm actually proud to tell people I used to see Jaco working on his chops saturday afternoons at Modern Music when the store was still on Sunrise Blvd. and nobody outside of south Florida knew who he was. I never got to know him like you or John Tillman (who went to northeast high with him) but I ran into Jaco enough to feel pride in being there in the beginning of the revolution of the bass guitar. Now with this amazing set of cd's you put together the rest of the world can get a taste of what it was like to be here then. I can't wait to hear more. You have my number, call me if there's anything I can do to help. See you at the Grammys

Bob, if it weren't for you Jaco would not have a legacy like his daughter Mary says and we would not have the greatest Jaco product ever made. We are lucky that you had the foresight to record all those rare recordings, I can not wait for the rest to come out. Hail to Bob Bobbing, and thank you Mary (love your letter to daddy), John and Tracy!
